Larry Rabeneck

11-27-1943 - 05-17-2009

Larry Rabeneck, of Blue Mound, KS, died Sunday of a lung illness at the age of 65.

Larry’s exuberance touched everyone he encountered.  From his infectious, booming laugh, to his immediate embrace of strangers as friends, he made a positive impact wherever he went.

Larry was born November 27, 1943 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, but spent most of his life in the Kansas City area.  He graduated from North Kansas City High School and went on to obtain an Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  Larry married Sharon Abshier on April 7, 1966 in Corning, Arkansas.  He was a Private First Class of the 42nd Army Band and a proud member of the MG Club of Kansas City.

He spent 33 years working at Honeywell, formerly King Radio Corp.  There, he became one of the first Six Sigma Black Belts.  After attaining Master Black Belt status, Larry and his wife Sharon built one of the pre-eminent Six Sigma educational companies in the U.S.  His passion for teaching and mentoring is apparent in the enthusiasm and success of his students worldwide.

Larry recently relocated from Olathe to their property in Blue Mound.  As an avid outdoorsman, Larry loved “the farm,” and relished hunting, fishing, planting, and herding cows.  He was very proud to have won the Linn County Conservation Grass Award.

Larry is survived by his parents, Malvern and Maylene Rabeneck, two brothers, Kenneth (Mickey) Rabeneck, James (Jesse) Rabeneck, wife, Sharon, his children, Starla (Kendall) West, Sandy (Trevor) King and his two grandchildren, Elijah and Ardyn West.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mapleton Cemetery in care of the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Blue Mound, Kansas.

Earl married Dorothy Madgeline Lowe on Nov. 22, 1941 at Nevada, Mo. This union was blessed with three daughters. They moved to the current homestead in 1957 and remained there until the time of their death.

He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Heber City, Utah. He also served in the last U.S. Calvary at the age of 14. Since he was big for his age, they didn’t bother to check it. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
Earl enjoyed life. He loved to have company and visit for hours. He really never met a stranger. He enjoyed going to parades with his mules and surrey for several years. Reading a western, and playing checkers and pitch were some of his favorite pastimes.
He worked as a supervisor and dynamite technician in Topeka before becoming superintendent of construction for Ray Wisdom of Pittsburg, until his retirement. He came out of retirement in 1976 to work as an inspector for the Rural WaterDistrict for a couple of years. Following this he farmed and raised cattle, working up until two weeks before his death tending the homestead.
Earl always tended a large garden to feed his family and many others in the area that were in need. He never turned a hungry person away from his table and was overly generous with most. He truly cared for his fellow man. It was said that he had his own religion based on the Ten Commandments.
