Bobby Dean Shipley, age 63, a former resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, and more recently of Osawatomie, died Sunday, January 15, 2012, at the Life Care Center of Osawatomie. He was born September 13, 1948, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Ralph Richard Shipley and Fern Maxine Dennis Shipley. He graduated from Blue Mound High School and had attended Pittsburg State University. He had operated his own trucking company and upholstery business. He was a member of the Mapleton Community of Christ Church.

Survivors include a brother, Sam Shipley and wife, Marilyn of Osawatomie, Kansas and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rick Shipley.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the Mapleton Cemetery, Mapleton, Kansas. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mapleton Community of Christ Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701. Charles Edward McGee


June 9, 1932 -January 3, 2012

 

Charles Edward McGee age 79 of Mound City, Kansas died Tuesday January 3, 2012 at his home, the same house he was born in. He was born on June 9, 1932 at Blue Mound, Kansas the son of Glenn and Reta Dizmang McGee. Charles was a 1951 graduate of Blue Mound High School. Charles was drafted into the United States Army; on January 29, 1954 he took his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas and then wireman school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

He served his country in Korea from July 1954 to October 1955. He married Carolyn Lee Dozier on April 29, 1954 at the Wall Street Christian Church, where he was a member since 1945. He was self- employed as a farmer, stockman, and dairyman, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was also a member of the American Legion and a 4-H Leader. Charles was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Blue Mound, Kansas, a son Clarence Alan McGee and wife Debbie of Blue Mound, Kansas, a daughter Kimberly Ann Grigsby and husband Art of Blue Mound, Kansas, a sister Eleanor Rogers of Mapleton, Kansas, nine grandchildren; Ian and Alek Ginther, Rian and Reace Young, Abby and Ethan Bruce, Christina Lubecke and husband Matt, Tucker Grigsby, and one great granddaughter Elaina Lubeke, two nieces Susan Smith and Husband Richard, Karen Olson and Husband Richie, a nephew Tim Rogers and Wife Elda, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
 

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday January 7, 2012 at the Wall Street Christian Church in rural Mound CIty, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday January 6, 2012 at the Wall Street Christian Church. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery in Mound City, Kansas. The Family suggests contributions to Hospice of Kansas in C/O of Schneider Funeral Home P.O. Box J Mound City, Kansas 66056. Charles Sylvester Grant, Jr., age 92, a former resident of rural Redfield and more recently of Chanute, Kansas, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas. He was born November 3, 1919, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Charles S. Grant, Sr. and Dora Maude Wooton Grant. From the age of ten, Charles was raised by his uncle and aunt George and Lee Donia Grant. He married Darlene Marie Ball on October 14, 1942, at Fort Scott. In addition to operating his own farm, Charles also had been employed by Peerless Products for twenty-four years. He was a member of the Mapleton United Methodist Church and a sixty year member of the Devon Masonic Lodge #92. He enjoyed traveling as well as mowing his lawn and cutting wood.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of the home in Chanute; two sons, Kenneth Grant, Richards, Missouri and Phillip Grant and wife, Connie, Belle Plaine, Kansas; two daughters, Charlene Riley and husband Lonnie, Chanute, Kansas and Mary Viel and husband Brian, Hutchison, Kansas. Also surviving are ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Dale Grant; two brothers, John William and Sammy Grant and two sisters, Iola Mae Parkman and Opal Marie Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2011, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Dayton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mapleton United Methodist Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Alice E. Hays, formerly of the Fort Scott area, passed away in the early morning on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at Medicalodges of Wichita in Wichita, Kan., at the age of 75.

Alice was born the daughter of George Blackburn and Hazel Irene Miller on Monday, Aug. 31, 1936, in St. Helens, Ore.

Alice was a purchase order clerk for the Boeing Company for numerous years. She enjoyed reading and was very fond of Montana after she and her husband Paul spent years living there.

Survivors include; son Frank Hays and his wife Patricia of Lawrence, Kan.; son David Hays and his wife Sherry of Mulvane, Kan.; granddaughter Amanda Hinrichs and her husband Dustin of Kansas City, Kan.; grandson Chad Hays of Pittsburg, Kan.; grandson Eric Hays of Mulvane, Kan.; brother Bruce Blackburn of St. Helens, Ore., and sister Rose Smith and her husband Jim of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Paul Hays.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

A private interment for Alice will be held at the Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan.

Ina Margaret Lafferty, age 87, resident of rural Bronson, Kansas, died Thursday, December 8, 2011, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born September 9, 1924, in Uniontown, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur Andrew Walker and Jessie Newtown McHenry Walker. She graduated from Uniontown High School. She married John Edward Lafferty. He preceded her in death. She worked as a waitress at the White Grill in Fort Scott, Kansas, for over ten years. She also raised cattle and sheep as well as co-owning the antique store in Bronson. She often set up booths at flee markets and raised vegetables in her garden. Ina greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and the kids, especially the kids at church. She had the responsibility of raising and caring for her handicapped grandson, Richard, for the past twenty five years. They both loved traveling together. She was a member of the Mapleton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Kay Leins, Mound City, Kansas; a brother, Clarence Walker, Uniontown, Kansas; and a sister, Clara Ann Finfrock, Bronson, Kansas. Also surviving are ten grandchildren; thirty one great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Lenora Headley, Laverne O’Harah, and infant May Mary Walker; two sons, David Edward Lafferty and Paul Allen Lafferty; as well as her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 14th, at the Mapleton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Uniontown cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel. Memorials are suggested to either the Mapleton United Methodist Church or the Richard Lafferty Trust and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel, P.O. Box 93, Bronson, Kansas 66716. Otis Snyder, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at his home in Weir, Kan. He was born June 18, 1927, to Dolphia Anderson and Zella Margaret Snyder in Osawatomie, Kan. Otis attended Osawatomie High School until he entered the Navy. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in World War II. After his discharge, he returned to complete his high school diploma on the GI bill in 1951. Otis and Harriet Conrad Picht were married Feb. 14, 1990. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include one brother, Kenneth of Osawatomie; three stepchildren, Kristy Beckman of Wichita, Becky Krause of Weir and Phillip Picht of Fort Scott; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Otis was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Cletis, and a brother, Dolphia (Toby).

Otis worked at the railroad for 15 years, General Motors for 10 years and he worked in the plumbing department at Osawatomie State Hospital for 20 years where he retired as the plumbing supervisor in 1989. Otis and Harriet lived at Hidden Valley Lake in Mapleton for 21 years. They moved to Weir in November to have better access to medical facilities for his dialysis and cancer care.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society. His remains will be cremated and a private service will be held in the spring.

Ellis Fredrick Stoughton, age 91, resident of Mapleton, Kansas, left us on November 24, 2011. He was born July 2, 1920, in Mapleton, the son of Fredrick Stoughton and Mary Josephine Faulhaber. He married Mary Elizabeth Blair. Most of his life was spent farming. He also carried the U. S. Mail from Mapleton and Devon to Fort Scott. He would pick up the Tribune newspaper and deliver on his way home to Fulton, Prescott, Pleasanton, Mound City, Blue Mound, and back to Mapleton. If there was any daylight left, he would be back to work on the farm until dark. Although he was crippled, he wasn’t afraid of work, making it difficult to keep up with him.

Survivors include his wife Mary of the home; a brother, Sheldon Stoughton, Pleasanton, Kansas; a sister, Pauline Beeler, Fort Scott, Kansas; and a daughter, Karen Sue Peery and husband Ed, Mapleton. Also surviving are grandchildren Kristi Fowler and husband Sid with sons Wyatt Ellis Fowler and Jesse Lee Fowler, Olathe, Kansas; Andy Perry and children Ian Perry and Andrea Peery, Grove, Oklahoma; Susan Brown and husband Danny with children Bailie Elisabeth Brown, Gunnar Joe Brown, and Allie Nacole Brown, Fort Scott; Bill Martin and wife Wendy with children Autumn, Alex, Cassie and Alexa, Fort Scott; Matt Martin and wife Rachael with children Devon, Morgan, and Kelsey, Fort Scott; Troy Stoughton and children Lexi, Libi and Drew Stoughton, Mapleton: Amy Stoughton and daughter Jandyn Stoughton, Fort Scott; and Christina Logue and husband Jason with children Brayden and Emma of Ohio. He was preceded in death by his son, James Raymond Stoughton; two brothers, Raymond Stoughton and Milton Jack Stoughton; and one sister, Bernice Lawrence.

Rev. Ron Brown will conduct funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 28th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the West Plains Cemetery, Fort Scott. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Carl E. Willard

Carl E. Willard, age 78, former resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Harmony Gardens Home in Warrensburg, Missouri.

 He was born March 16, 1933, in Mapleton, Kansas, the son of Clyde Marion Willard and Mildred Harris Willard. He graduated from Bronson High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He later attended Junior College at Independence, Kansas prior to being drafted into the Army. Following his military service, he married Mary Helen Scott. She preceded him in death on December 2, 1962. He later married Imogene Fewell. She also preceded him in death. While in Fort Scott, Carl was employed by the Red Barn Restaurant and also the Western Insurance Company. He later worked for many years for the Gold Foundry in Clinton, Missouri. He loved cars and always kept his in excellent condition. He also enjoyed playing pool, cards and dominos.

Survivors include three sons, Craig Young, Kansas City, Kansas, Vincent Willard, Joplin, Missouri and Darvin Willard, Iola, Kansas; two daughters, Shelba Williams, Knob Noster, Missouri and Gloria Mitchell, Port Arthur, Texas. Also surviving are three sisters, Minnie Wrenn, Mary Etta Willard and Edith Hawkins, all of Fort Scott; twenty grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Melvin and James Willard and a daughter, Peggy Campbell who passed away September 3, 2011.

Frank Williams will conduct funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post # 1165 V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Mark    Lee     Scharenberg

Mark Lee Scharenberg, age 59, a resident of Mapleton, Kansas, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 2, 2011, following a vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 69, south of Fort Scott. He was born April 16, 1952, in Marion, Kansas, the son of Orville Ray Scharenberg and Mary Anna Goertz Scharenberg. He was raised on the family’s dairy farm. He graduated from Blue Mound High School with the class of 1970. He joined the National Guard in February of 1971, and served for six years. He married Debbie Ann Lindbloom on June 3, 1972, in Fredonia, Kansas. Mark held many jobs in his lifetime. Most recently he owned and operated his trenching and excavating company as well as Mapleton Gas Pipe Line, Inc. for the last twenty years. In his early years he worked one year for Jack Noah as a contractor in Altoona, Kansas. He worked for Windsor Mobile Homes for four years. He was employed by Ron Eldridge as a mechanic in Uniontown. He owned and operated the Mapleton Service Station for ten years. He served on the Uniontown U235 school board for seven years. He held office in the Timberhill Township. He served on the council and as Mayor for the town of Mapleton. He was a volunteer fire fighter. He also did work for both the Bourbon and Linn County water districts. Mark was certified as a Sports Pilot who built and flew his own planes. He was a member of the Kansas City Flyers club as well as the AOPA. Besides flying, he also loved to slalom water ski. He was a member of the Xenia Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and taught Junior Church. Mark took care of anything the residents of Mapleton called upon him to do. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife Debbie of the home; three daughters, Carrie Miller and husband Dustin, Hiattville, Kansas, Cristie Nelson and husband Matt, Edmond, Oklahoma, and Katie Armstrong and husband Billy, El Reno, Oklahoma; two brothers, David Scharenberg and wife Linda, Mapleton, Kansas, and Fred Scharenberg and wife Lori, Raytown, Missouri; two sisters, Mary Fay Lalman and husband Jerry, Mapleton, and Leta Hale and husband Jim, Hollister, Missouri. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Trenton, Gavin, Hayden, and Korbin Miller; Adelee, Cooper, Brady, and Gunner Nelson; and William Armstrong; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two nieces, Jeri Lynn Lalman and Reesa Lalman Smith; as well as his mother.

James Clay “J.C.” Enloe, age 23, died Saturday, May 21, 2011. He was born June 9, 1987, at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of John Lee Enloe and Lisa Ann Davidson Enloe. He graduated from Jayhawk Linn High School. J.C. did carpentry work and had been employed by Mid-Continental Restoration. In addition to spending time with his daughter, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, listening to music and playing horse shoes.

Survivors include his mother, Lisa Enloe, Mapleton, Kansas; a daughter, Alexis Jo Enloe, Pittsburg; a brother, Blake Enloe, Fort Scott, Kansas. Also surviving are his grandparents, David and Mary Enloe, Fort Scott and Donna and Clarence Williams, Mapleton, Kansas; three uncles, Marvin Davidson, Bryan Davidson and Darwin Enloe and an aunt, Teresa Varin.

Rev. Marty DeWitt will conduct funeral services at 6:00 P.M. Thursday, May 26, 2011, at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown. A time of visitation will follow the funeral service. Following services, there will be cremation and private family burial will take place in the Marmaton Cemetery.
