What a wonderful Homecoming this year.
June 12, 2010, rain tried to stop the fun of the Garden Tractor
Pull
but it went off with out a hitch. Then June 13
turned out to be just wonderful. One rain in
the morning didn't stop any of the fun so the rain came
again about parade time, but the parade went on and fun
was had by everyone!!
Drawing for the musical
Bear was won by R Long and the Drawing for the Tractor Throw was
Judy

75
YEARS AGO
(1936) From the Fort Scott
Tribune -- This was
Jimmy Wier's Father
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE, Blue Mound,
Nov. 3 -- Caught by the swift waters
of the Osage River, which had risen
rapidly during the afternoon, Lloyd
Wier,
farmer living southeast of here,
narrowly escaped drowning about 5
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Wier
had been shucking corn on his farm
land across the river from his home.
When he started on his wagon to ford
the river to return home, he did not
notice that the river had risen
during the afternoon. He floated
downstream on the wagon rack until
he was caught in the current. He
floated downstream on the wagon rack
until he caught a tree branch
overhanging the river and was able
to hold on until help came. A horse
that was pulling the wagon was
drowned, but
Wier
was able to hold on to the mule
which also had been hauling the
load. Fred Stewart, a neighbor,
heard Wier's
call for help and rushed to his aid.
But Stewart was on the wrong side of
the river and was unable to aid. So
he ran to his home and called other
neighbors, who succeeded in saving
Wier
and pulling the mule from the water.

Mapleton
Bike Riders
First Ride
lots of fun!

The group met at the Community Building
Saturday morning. |
|

The group spent some time
visiting between lunch and the ride home.
On Saturday, August
13th, the first Mapleton Bike Ride took place, leaving
from the Mapleton Community Building. Five bikes and
eight riders took the scenic route from Mapleton to
Osawatomie for lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After a
brief rest to "let their food settle" the group headed
back to Mapleton. Everyone agreed it was a good ride
and that the food hit the spot. The next ride will be
on October 8th. Details will be announced at a later
date. Anyone interested in being notified of the rides
should call Mike Hueston, 620-224-7034 or Brenda Boehm,
620-743-3759. |
(1936)
Thomas Hill, a
pioneer black man and a retired
farmer, passed away this morning at
the home, 515 S. Barbee, at the age
of 89. He came to Fort Scott in
1851. He leaves his wife and six
children: Mrs.
Laura Bean
of Mapleton, Mrs. Mina Smith of
Kansas City, Mrs. Zella Vann of Fort
Scott, Roy Chester and Earl, all at
home. There are 16 grandchildren and
13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hill was
of a kind, gentle and unassuming
disposition. He came to Fort Scott
when a small boy with his parents.
This city at that time was just a
trading post. The funeral will be
Wednesday at the Mt. Zion Baptist
church, with interment in West
Plains Cemetery.
Another
extensive prairie fire, largely
because the drought has rendered
much vegetation so dry that it is
highly flammable, occurred
yesterday. The fire covered an area
of perhaps 100 acres south of the
Walkertown road and east of the road
extending from the Walkertown road
to Tubtown. The land over which the
fire swept is largely owned by P.C.
Lockwood, Charles Holstein, Lee
Bollinger and Howard Ingraham. Fifty
or more farmers fought the flames
and finally brought it under
control.

Longtime vendor offers variety of
fudge
Friday, August 5, 2011
By
Mary Corpstein
Fort Scott Tribune - Fort Scott,
Kansas
The Fort Scott Farmers' Market's
longest-running selling vendor is
Ms. Leta Herboldshermire from the
Mapleton
area.
Leta's baking is her main product
at the market. Her breads, cookies
and varieties of fudge are all
amazing. Yes, I said fudges. It is
easy to see how she has built a
loyal customer base over the years.
Leta also makes an assortment of
hanging T-towels and whimsical dish
cloth items for sale. If any of you
are like me, I need at least one new
towel a year. With Leta's selection,
I have trouble choosing just one.
There are towels to go with any
kitchen decor.
Even though Leta's work schedule
makes her market attendance
irregular, it is so worth the trip
to the market to seek her out. What
a treat it is when she's there.
This Saturday, Aug. 6 is the
Tomato Festival. Activities include
a Tomato Tasting Contest; Friends of
the Fort fundraiser; a guest chef
with free food samples; children's
art activity contest; and all free
family fun.
Produce this week at the market
includes cabbage, summer squashes,
onions, okra, eggplant, peppers,
cucumbers, spaghetti squash,
potatoes, herbs, garlic, cantaloupe,
watermelon and tomatoes of all
sizes, colors and varieties.
Eat fresh, buy local, know your
farmer and know your food.
Get to a local downtown business
and check into the "Bargains on the
Bricks" drawing to be held Saturday,
Aug. 6 for a $50 downtown shopping
spree. See you at the market.
